You’re in a war. You live in a fallen world, and you have an adversary called the devil. And yes, the sin nature still exists in your flesh.

That’s why sin is a very real struggle—a struggle you’ll face as long as you live on this earth.

But I want to tell you, friend, that you can experience victory over your sin!

How? The apostle Paul tells us the key in Romans 7. In this chapter, Paul outlines the reality of the sin struggle, his personal war with sin, and the antidote to sin. It’s a powerful truth that can set you free and give you victory over your flesh.

In Romans 7:8-13, Paul says,

But sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, produced in me all manner of evil desire. For apart from the law sin was dead. I was alive once without the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died. And the commandment, which was to bring life, I found to bring death. For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it killed me. Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good.

Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful.

In these verses, Paul explains that though the law is good and tells us right from wrong, it also awakens the sin nature in our flesh. The law presented a standard we couldn’t live up to, and thus it revealed the problem—that we are “carnal” (flesh ruled) and “sold under sin” (v. 14).

But the law was never meant to be our Savior. It was given to reveal our problem and point us to the answer—Jesus!

Verses 15 to 24 explain the struggle of sin. Paul is uncomfortably candid as he talks about his own battle with his flesh. But at the end of that passage, he gives us some very good news: You and I can experience victory over sin through the person and work of Jesus Christ!

I share more about how you can be set free as you learn to lean daily upon God’s grace in my message, “Victory Over Sin.” I hope you watch or listen here.
